Valentine’s Day happens every year on February 14, and the celebrations kick off a week before with special days like Rose Day, Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day, Hug Day, and Kiss Day. These days are for expressing love in different ways.
Valentine’s Day itself is a time for couples to celebrate their strong bond, romantic moments, and special feelings for each other. People mark this day by enjoying time together, going on dinner dates, planning surprises, and exchanging romantic gifts.
Why we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. One popular story links it to an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, where women were paired with men through a lottery. Later, Pope Gelasius I replaced this with St Valentine’s Day, associated with romance since the 14th century. Another tale says St Valentine was executed on February 14 for secretly marrying couples to prevent husbands from going to war.
In Roman mythology, Cupid, the angel of love, is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. The bow and arrow of Cupid symbolize piercing hearts and casting the spell of love. That’s why Cupid is a common symbol for Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day wasn’t linked to romance until the 14th century. It was initially the Feast of Saint Valentine recorded on February 14 in the 8th-century Gelasian Sacramentary. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the association with love blossomed with the concept of courtly love.
