Thansettakij—usually regarded as the premier Thai media group—made a bold step into the future with the introduction of Proud Asia, Thailand’s first female AI news reporter. Proud Asia, launched on July 1, 2024, brings efficiency and accuracy to news reporting by embracing the latest AI technology. She has been trained on enormous data sets that enable her to process information at superhuman speeds and turn this information into clear, lucid reports tailored specifically for a digital audience. The innovation comes as media consumption habits continue to shift to online platforms. AI in the newsroom The move is in tandem with the fast-growing trend of AI setting foot inside newsrooms globally. In April 2024, Nation TV, a Thai station, introduced AI news anchors named “Natcha” and “Natrans,” the first in the country. Similarly, China’s own Xinhua News Agency had launched an AI anchor called “Xin Xiaomeng” as far back as 2020. Benefits and challenges For example, while AI journalism advocates talk about its potentials in efficiency, 24/7 distribution of news, and personalization to large and diverse audiences, concerns override about the biases that may get carried into its AI algorithms and how this will hit human journalists. The future of news: The launch of Proud Asia is a milestone in local Thai media. AI is unlikely to replace human journalists, but it surely will reshape the industry in years to come. This is the line that Thansettakij has taken: to use AI not to replace human journalism but to enhance it. And so, this opens up to the way toward a future where both can coexist in order to provide informative and engaging content for audiences.
