According to individuals who spoke to The Economic Times, the government is getting ready to take a heavy crackdown on the sales of protein drinks, powders, and supplements that either don’t have authorized medical certifications or make false promises.
After conducting a thorough investigation, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) intends to impose more stringent laws on these items. This study found a troubling trend of goods making dubious health claims and providing false nutritional information on shop shelves, in gyms, and on e-commerce platforms.
“Many protein products on the market have more negative effects than positive ones. Tight regulations are intended to prevent harm to the public’s health, an FSSAI representative told ET.
According to sources close to the development, the upcoming crackdown may result in the banning of numerous products that do not comply with the new criteria.
“Protein product mislabelling is a major concern as it is widespread. Furthermore, what exactly are these products? We don’t know,” Ambrish Mithal, Max Healthcare’s chairman of endocrinology and diabetes, told ET.
“If one’s regular diet isn’t sufficient for protein requirements, one can take protein supplements, but in limited quantities and under regulation and medical guidance,” he stated.
