Organized by Vogue magazine, it is considered the most glamorous and exclusive fashion event globally, often dubbed “fashion’s biggest night.”
Invitations to the Met Gala are highly coveted and extended to personalities perceived as culturally relevant across various professional spheres, including fashion, film, television, music, theater, business, sports, social media, and politics.
Established in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the inaugural gala was a fundraiser marking the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibit. Initially priced at $50 per ticket, the entry fee has increased over the years, reaching $75,000 in 2024. Over time, the Met Gala has evolved into one of New York City’s most prominent charitable events.

What is the theme of the Met Gala 2024?
The theme for the 2024 Met Gala is “The Garden of Time.” It celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The exhibit will display around 250 rare items from the Costume Institute’s collection. The pieces, which span over 400 years of fashion history, will include designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more. Some garments, like a Charles Frederick Worth ball gown from 1877, will be displayed via video animation, light projection, AI, CGI, and other forms of sensory stimulation because they’re too fragile to wear again.
According to Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition will be divided into three main “zones”—land, sea, and sky—to honor the natural world. “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” he said.
