Tumbbad Tops Box Office, Beats Ghilli in Successful Re-Release
Tumbbad remains excellent at the Indian box office for 11 days and is on a roll as it beats Ghilli to become the highest grosser in India on its re-release in the circuit. Rahi Anil Barve’s film stars Sohum Shah in it and had miserably flopped at the box office initially but miraculously made a comeback.
After re-releasing the film for its second weekend, it minted more than Rs 20 crore net. It now crosses a title in the country as the highest grossing release, beating Ghilli, one of the biggest hits to have been released in the mid 2000s.
With a total net collection standing at Rs 33 crore and strong performance continuing into its second week, Tumbbad is well on its way to possibly reaching a final total around Rs 45 crore. The filmmakers also are looking at a wider international release that might enhance the success of the film even more.
Something that has been especially welcome in the re-release of Tumbbad, whose lifetime earnings have more than doubled from its initial run of earning Rs 12 crore. This is a scenario of a film that was really forward-thinking.
Tumbbad has redone its status in the industry with a great re-release performance. These re-releases not only have changed perceptions but also raised the hope of getting a sequel, which is expected to garner considerable interest and investment. Top grossing re-releases in India: The diversity in films and remarkable earnings speaks for itself. Tumbbad is the No 1 grosser, raking in Rs 26.5 crore in just 10 days, keeps pace with the legendary Ghilli, also at Rs 26.5 crore. Titanic comes next at Rs 18 crore, and Sholay 3D manages Rs 13 crore. Laila Majnu was a lovely love story which made Rs 11.5 crore over 45 days, matching the figure for Rockstar, also Rs 11.5 crore. Last is Avatar, which ends the chart with Rs 10 crore.
Tumbbad has impressed with all box office collections. On Day 8, the film collected ₹3.04 crore, then ₹2.50 crore on Day 9 and ₹2.59 crore on Day 10. Which again continued the upward trend into Day 11 as it added ₹1.06 crore to its total, taking it to ₹22.63 crore. That is to say, the second-weekend gross should have crossed what was made over the opening weekend: an evidence of growing interest and positive word-of-mouth, attracting new viewers and old fans of the original release.
Tumbbad, an upcoming horror-fantasy film, being the creation of Sohrab Gupte, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and creatively guided by Anand Gandhi, has indeed managed to captivate the audience with its amazing blend of horror-fantasy and exquisite visual storytelling. Its re-release, presented by Eros International and Aanand L Rai, has again got much excitement and curiosity among the viewers.
This is particularly meaningful for the film in that it has achieved those milestones without being accessible to OTT platforms. In fact, the exclusive theatrical run has generated much publicity and support with enthusiasm as a celebration of viewing more classic films on the big screen where their full artistic value and emotive intensity can be fully appreciated.
