Curry Barker brings a fresh and unsettling take on the classic “be careful what you wish for” narrative with Obsession, marking a striking new chapter in his filmmaking journey. Presented by Universal Pictures India, distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, the film explores the quiet yet powerful pull of human fixation and desire, and releases on 29th May.
With Obsession, Barker explores the unsettling idea of being consumed by desire whether for a person, a thought, or a feeling pushing it into territory where control begins to slip and consequences take over.
The story follows Bear (Michael Johnston), who has long harboured feelings for his best friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) but never confesses them. Hoping to change that, he discovers a mysterious “One Wish Willow” that is said to grant a single wish. In a moment of desperation, Bear wishes Nikki would love him more than anyone else and breaks it only to find his wish seemingly coming true. But what begins as a dream quickly turns unsettling as Nikki doesn’t just fall for him she becomes dangerously obsessed, and everyone around them can sense something is deeply wrong.
Talking about the script and its layered complexities, Inde Navarrette shared that the moment she read it, she felt an immediate and complete understanding of her character Nikki. She expressed, “She is the first character that I understood completely. It was such a euphoric feeling being that confident in knowing who your character is.”
Navarrette’s deep understanding of the character allowed her to hit the ground running from day one of the shoot. As Barker recalled, “On the first day of shooting, Inde’s first scene was when Nikki freaks out after they kiss, and the first take is what you see in the movie.” He further added, “When we saw it that first day, we knew we had the perfect actor for the role.”
With its gripping premise, emotionally charged performances, and unsettling exploration of desire and obsession, Obsession stands out as a compelling new vision in contemporary horror storytelling.
