Gangs of Wasseypur Returns to Cinemas: Uncut Re-release Across India
India’s fastest-growing and third-largest national multiplex chain Miraj Cinemas proudly announces the return of Anurag Kashyap’s iconic crime saga Gangs of Wasseypur I and II to the big screen, offering audiences an exclusive opportunity to experience both films back-to-back in their original, uncut form. The two films are running successfully at over 50 locations of Miraj Cinemas across India, offering moviegoers a chance to relive the groundbreaking cinematic experience as originally intended. Gangs of Wasseypur was originally released in two parts in 2012, in June and August, respectively. The films are celebrated for their gritty portrayal of gang rivalries within Dhanbad’s coal mafia and their intense, dark humour. The ensemble cast, featuring acclaimed actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, Reema Sen, Rajkummar Rao, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Piyush Mishra, Jaideep Ahlawat and others, delivers unforgettable performances. Praised for their depth, storytelling, and cinematography, the films quickly gained cult status.
Mantraraj Paliwal, Vice Chairman, Miraj Group said, “We’re delighted to bring Gangs of Wasseypur I & II back to the big screen at over 50 Miraj Cinemas locations across India starting August 30. This film isn’t just a movie; it’s a powerful experience that holds a special place in the hearts of so many people. Watching it in a theatre, with its raw energy and gripping storytelling, is a completely different experience in comparison to watching it on a streaming platform.”
Director and co-writer Anurag Kashyap said, “I am very grateful to Miraj Cinemas for re-releasing the films and showing them back to back, for it wasn’t given that chance outside of the film festivals to the audience and for all involved in the film. I am just very grateful that a whole generation that discovered it on OTT platforms will get to watch it on the big screen.”
When the films were released originally, they were rated ‘A’ (Adults Only), which meant that many under-18 viewers missed out on experiencing the film’s gritty storytelling and intense performances in cinemas. Under-18 audiences had to either wait for an edited version to air on television or watch it later on streaming platforms, missing the films’ unfiltered experience. But this re-release gives them an opportunity to watch it as it was originally intended to, like a big-screen spectacle.
Zeishan Quadri, co-writer and actor said, “I am excited and elated at the re-release of the cult classic GOW I & II after over a decade. Audiences loved it back then, and the children, now 18+, can go to theatres to watch it. Many told me that they had missed it watching it in theatres. They, too, can enjoy it now! Cinegoers are already anticipating a thunderous response at the box office!”
Amit Sharma, MD, Miraj Entertainment Limited said “The response has been amazing—advance bookings have already surpassed our expectations, and we’re thrilled to see such enthusiasm. We’re considering adding more screens and shows to keep up with the growing demand. It’s heartwarming to know that both longtime fans and those discovering the film for the first time are eager to experience this cult classic on the big screen. We can’t wait to share this incredible cinematic journey with everyone,”
Piyush Mishra, actor, co-lyricist and co-composer said,“It was a great experience working on this film. It truly showcases the genius of one person, and that is Anurag Kashyap.”

Actors Speak:
Manoj Bajpayee
“I am personally quite elated that Miraj Cinemas has taken the initiative of re-releasing a film that has been liked and admired by each and every member of the audience till now. There is still so much coverage, so much write-up, and so much creative work done by the audience. It seems that the memory of watching the film hasn’t faded away. I personally thank Miraj Cinemas for getting Gangs of Wasseypur all over again. I hope the audience will relive the memories of watching it in the theaters and get as many people as possible to it. Hope Gangs of Wasseypur will again start the trend of re-releasing all the great films. I also hope Satya will be screened in theaters one day. Thank you.”
Nawazuddin Siddiqui:
“Watching both parts of Gangs of Wasseypur together, as it was originally intended, is a very special experience. This film is not just a story for us; it’s a journey. Whenever someone discovers it, they become a fan. I am confident that this film will now touch even more hearts. Over the past 12 years, this film has received love and support from a new generation, and we are grateful to Miraj Cinemas for this initiative. Thank you, Miraj Cinemas, for bringing this amazing film back to the big screen.”
Huma Qureshi:
“Gangs of Wasseypur was a turning point for me. I had worked in an ad with Anurag and that’s how he cast me in the role. Mohsina had an attitude, and her character went against every stereotype of how women were portrayed in cinema back then. Seeing the film re-release feels like coming full circle. I want young women to walk back into theatres and relive her larger-than-life persona, reminding everyone that they, too, have got that fire. The audience’s love for the film is timeless, and it has only grown. I’m thrilled that people get to relive the movie on the big screen.”
Vineet Kumar Singh:
“When Gangs of Wasseypur was originally released in 2012, it was well-received by audiences. However, over the past 12 years, the film has grown immensely in its cultural significance and audience reach. Many people who became fans of Wasseypur did not have the chance to experience it in theatres. They often talk about how much they would love to see it on the big screen. I’ve been receiving numerous calls about the re-release, and I want to express my gratitude to Miraj Cinemas for making this possible. It’s not just me who is excited—everyone involved in the film, from the actors to the technicians, feels the same way. Wherever we go—whether it’s colleges, universities, or various events—Wasseypur leaves its mark. It has a unique influence and continues to resonate with audiences. I believe many people are thrilled about the re-release of Wasseypur. It has truly become a cult classic, thanks to Anurag Kashyap sir, who gave me and many others the opportunity to be a part of it. A lot of actors who emerged from this film are doing exceptionally well today. I feel that when good films are re-released, they sometimes don’t get the attention they deserve. But there is definitely an audience out there ready to watch them. This is why re-releasing great films like Wasseypur is so important—it allows a whole new generation of moviegoers to experience them as they were meant to be seen.”
