Sony SAB’s upcoming family entertainer Kyunki Papa Kehte Hain is being helmed by producer Yash Patnaik of Inspire Films Limited. Talking about the show, he shared that it is a family-centric story and believes the format still has an audience.
“The starting point was very simple—families are changing, relationships are changing, but the emotional need to belong to a family remains as strong as ever,” he said.
He added that the intent was to capture something audiences would recognize in their own homes. “We wanted to tell a story that reflects the warmth, chaos, humor, and contradictions of a contemporary Indian family,” he said.
The show, he revealed, took shape through close creative collaboration with the channel. “Kyunki Papa Kehte Hain came together through a very collaborative creative process with Sony SAB. From the beginning, there was a shared understanding that the show needed to be entertaining and lighthearted but at the same time rooted in recognizable relationships and situations. That became the foundation of the show,” he said.
Asked how much of the show is drawn from everyday family life rather than heightened drama, he said, “A great deal of it.”
He went on to explain that while individual scenes may be played up for effect, the underlying emotions stay grounded. “The situations may sometimes become comic and exaggerated for entertainment, but the emotions and relationships are very familiar. Parents trying to guide their children, children wanting independence, differences between generations, and expectations within a family—these are things most people have experienced in some form,” he said.
For Yash, that familiarity is what he expects will pull viewers in. “I think audiences connect with a show when they can recognize a little bit of themselves, their parents, their siblings, or their family conversations in the characters,” he said.
His solution has been to anchor everything in character work first. “We have therefore focused strongly on characters. If the characters are believable and their relationships are established properly, the humor and emotion can emerge naturally from the situations. That has been an important part of our creative process with Sony SAB,” Yash concluded.
