On 4th August 2026, Lions Club of Bombay West Coast visited, SMT Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind which was founded in 1900 by American missionary Anna Millard under the American Marathi Mission.
Ln Mala Shetty Donated 16-liter Pressure Cooker in memory of her Son Late SATEJ S SHETTY, accompanied by Club President, Ln Ekta Khosla, Ln Gouri Channe DC, Ln Rita R Gowda DC Blind Welfare. As the School has around 200 visually impaired female students they needed a Bigger Special Cooker to cook for them also Ln Rita & Ln Gouri donated 3 Stainless Steel Foldable Cloth Dryer Stand Double Rack, as inmates staying in Blind school are more than around 140, rest students go home nearby, as their relatives or parents come to take home, some though visually impaired go on their home may be by train as some are staying far away from Blind School in Dadar. The institution is a well-known residential and educational school dedicated to empowering visually impaired female students
The Lion members were Awestruck, about the Visually Impaired Students showed their full confidence in walking on the floor Classroom and walking down the floor going out to buy things even face people with The students are from all over India, like MP, Rajasthan Uttar Pradesh even North & South India, staff also told that the parents of these children invariably call every day to find about their children, as they are concerned. Lions C of Bombay West Coast did 25 projects so far from starting of year on 1st July, 2026, like, Relieve the Hunger at Ashok Rugnalay, for 500 + cancer patients. Gave food for them plus 100 and 100 raincoats to the Cancer Patients.
Environment: Planted 2500 trees of Neem, Peru, Ashoka , Mango For 80th Independence Day at Bal Kalyan Nagari.
The Centre started as a small relief shelter in Byculla for children blinded during the Solapur famine before moving to Dadar and being renamed in 1986.Founding and Early Years Started in 1900: Began as a tiny 10×10 room shelter in Byculla by Anna Millard for young famine victims. Shift to Education: Gradually transitioned from a basic care shelter into an academic and craft-learning center. Land Grant: Received a plot of land from the government in Dadar in 1920 to build a proper campus. Growth and Milestones First Graduates: A student named Devji Devadan became the first blind graduate in 1950, bringing national recognition. Principal Nam Aajgaonkar: Took charge in 1956 and transformed the school environment to focus strongly on the art, mental, and intellectual growth of girls. Renaming: The institution was officially renamed in 1986 as the Srimati Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind. Present Role Location: Situated at 160, Dadasaheb Phalke Road, Dadar East, Mumbai. Support: Functions as a government-aided, free residential primary-cum-secondary school empowering close to 170 visually impaired girls.
