With a 7.6-inch inner display, titanium construction, A20 Pro performance and an entirely new folding architecture, iPhone Duo marks Apple’s most dramatic redesign of the iPhone yet.

Cupertino, California: Apple has unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and a new interpretation of what the smartphone can be. Designed to combine the portability of a conventional phone with the expansive experience of a larger display, iPhone Duo introduces a foldable form factor while retaining the familiar iPhone experience.

Opened, the device features a 7.6-inch inner display, creating a larger canvas for multitasking, gaming and content. Closed, it becomes a compact device with a 5.4-inch outer display, offering 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.

The result is a phone that changes its physical proportions without asking users to change the way they interact with iOS.

Two Displays, One Continuous Experience

At the centre of iPhone Duo is its dual-display architecture.

The 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display is designed for one-handed use and everyday interactions when the device is closed. Open the phone and the 7.6-inch inner display provides an immersive workspace that is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally as users move between the two. A premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections while helping minimise the visibility of the crease associated with folding displays.

The displays also feature ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Apple says iPhone Duo will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C on either display later this year, opening up additional possibilities for note-taking, sketching and document markup.

Engineered Around the Hinge

A foldable phone is ultimately only as compelling as its folding mechanism, and Apple has placed considerable emphasis on the engineering behind iPhone Duo.

The device uses a precision hinge comprising more than 100 components, designed to control opening and closing while supporting the centre of the display when the phone is unfolded.

Internally, support ribs reinforce the structure, while carbon-fibre support elements and ceramic-fibre antenna inserts contribute to rigidity.

The folding display itself uses a multilayer construction designed to withstand the stresses of repeated opening and closing. Apple says custom adhesives allow the layers to move relative to one another during folding, much like pages in a book.

It is an approach that reflects Apple’s attempt to make the fold itself feel less like a compromise and more like an integral part of the product’s design.

Titanium Meets Ceramic Shield

Visually, iPhone Duo takes a distinctly premium approach.

The enclosure is crafted from grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, complemented by a 3D-printed hinge cover featuring a contrasting micro-blasted surface.

The back is protected by Ceramic Shield, while the outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

The device is also rated IP68 for splash, water and dust resistance.

iPhone Duo will be offered in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.

A Camera System Designed Around Folding

The new form factor also changes what is possible with the camera.

iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera with zero shutter lag, a 24MP default shooting mode and an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability.

The camera system is supported by a new computational photography pipeline and sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, while the larger sensor and fast aperture are designed to improve low-light performance.

A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera adds wider perspectives and macro photography.

On the front, a new Center Stage camera can automatically expand its field of view and rotate the frame to accommodate subjects, making it possible to capture photos and videos in different orientations without physically rotating the phone.

The folding design also creates new possibilities for how the phone can be positioned while shooting, making the camera experience one of the areas where the form factor becomes more than a visual novelty.

Performance Built for the Larger Canvas

Underneath the new design sits Apple’s A20 Pro chip, paired with an advanced thermal management system featuring a custom-designed vapor chamber.

Apple says iPhone Duo delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.

The A20 Pro is built using a 2-nanometre process, with improvements designed to support demanding workloads including gaming, multitasking and on-device AI.

A new display engine also allows the inner and outer screens to operate simultaneously as users transition between the two.

Battery Life Across Two Screens

Apple has developed a dual-battery architecture to make use of the space available across both sides of the foldable device.

The system delivers up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display, while Apple says users can achieve up to 24 hours of usage when both displays are used equally.

Fast charging can take the device to 50 percent in around 20 minutes, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes using MagSafe or Qi2.

iOS Reimagined for Folding

iPhone Duo launches with iOS 27.1, which has been adapted to make greater use of the device’s flexible form factor.

Multitasking becomes a central part of the experience, allowing two apps to run side by side on the larger inner display. Apple Intelligence and the company’s new Siri AI experience further integrate AI into the device, with capabilities designed around personal context, on-screen information and broader web-based knowledge.

The device also introduces a new dedicated Siri app and expanded ways to interact with Siri while using other content on screen.

Accessories Designed Around the New Form

Apple has introduced a new accessory ecosystem alongside iPhone Duo.

The iPhone Duo Folio features an integrated kickstand and is available in navy blue and taupe, while the iPhone Duo Case comes in sand and navy blue.

Both are designed to work with MagSafe and Qi2 charging.

The Folio is particularly suited to the larger inner display, allowing the device to be positioned for reading, viewing content or FaceTime while keeping the overall design relatively compact when folded.

A More Considered Approach to Materials

The environmental story is also part of iPhone Duo’s design.

Apple says the device contains 35 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled titanium in the 3D-printed hinge cover.

The phone is manufactured using 60 percent renewable energy across the supply chain, while its paper packaging is entirely fibre-based and recyclable at home.

The Beginning of a New iPhone Era

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone,” said John Ternus, Apple’s CEO.

With iPhone Duo, Apple is entering a category that has already been defined by several years of experimentation from other smartphone makers—but doing so with a distinctly Apple proposition: a foldable device that attempts to make the technology feel seamless rather than conspicuous.

The challenge for any foldable phone has always been balancing novelty with everyday usability. iPhone Duo approaches that challenge through its combination of two continuous displays, a compact closed form, titanium construction, a sophisticated hinge and the broader iOS ecosystem.

In doing so, Apple isn’t simply making an iPhone that folds.

It is proposing a different idea of what an iPhone can become when the screen itself is no longer fixed in one shape.

iPhone Duo starts at US$1,999 in 256GB and will also be available in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations.

Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability beginning October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including India. The device will be available in Star White and Night Sky.
