Hair shedding or actual hair loss? Traya’s new Hair Loss Awareness Month campaign featuring Rajkummar Rao wants Indians to know the difference—and catch the signs early.
Hair on your pillow. Hair in the shower drain. A suspiciously full hairbrush.
For many Indians, the first instinct is panic.
But according to Traya’s latest Hair Loss Awareness Month campaign, not every strand that falls is a warning sign. The real question is whether you are experiencing normal daily shedding or active hair loss—and knowing the difference could mean catching a problem before it becomes more difficult to address.
Enter Rajkummar Rao, who has teamed up with science-backed hair health brand Traya for a digital campaign built around something remarkably simple: a one-minute hair pull test.
The One-Minute Reality Check
The campaign introduces a simple at-home screening method designed to help people understand whether excessive shedding could warrant further attention.
The test involves gently pulling a section of approximately 40–50 strands of hair.
If fewer than five strands come away, the shedding is generally considered within the normal range. If six or more strands consistently come away, it may be a sign of active hair loss and could be worth investigating further.
The important word here is consistently.
One dramatic shower drain does not necessarily equal a hair-loss diagnosis. The test is positioned as an early signal—not a substitute for professional evaluation.
And that distinction is precisely what Traya wants to put on the awareness agenda.
Because Hair Loss Isn’t Always About Hair
The bigger conversation behind the campaign is that hair loss rarely has a single explanation.
Genetics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, dandruff, stress, lifestyle factors and underlying health conditions can all play a role. Which means the increasingly familiar beauty ritual of buying whichever serum, oil or supplement is currently dominating social media may not address the actual problem.
Traya’s message is therefore less panic and purchase and more observe, understand, investigate.
“People tend to swing between two extremes: ignoring hair loss until it’s severe or panicking at the first few strands,” says Saloni Anand, Co-founder of Traya. “This campaign is about the middle ground: knowing the difference between normal shedding and active hair loss.”
That middle ground might be exactly where India’s hair-care conversation needs to go.
Rajkummar Rao Makes Hair Health a Conversation
For Rajkummar Rao, the campaign is ultimately about making something people often find uncomfortable to discuss a little easier to understand.
“Hair loss affects millions of us, but most people don’t know when it’s time to take it seriously,” he says. “What I liked about this test is how simple it is; anyone can do it at home in a minute.”
The actor demonstrates the test in the campaign video, turning what can often feel like a private beauty anxiety into a straightforward health check.
And perhaps that is the campaign’s cleverest move: take the drama out of the diagnosis conversation.
From Viral Hair Hacks to Root-Cause Thinking
India’s hair-care market is crowded with quick fixes. Oils, supplements, scalp treatments, serums and social-media hacks promise everything from thicker strands to miraculous regrowth.
But hair health is rarely that simple.
Traya’s campaign instead encourages consumers to identify the potential reason behind persistent hair loss and seek appropriate guidance. As part of the initiative, consumers can also take Traya’s doctor-backed Hair Test, following which its team of 200+ doctors can recommend personalised hair-care plans.
Every prescription in a Traya plan, the brand says, is signed by a qualified doctor.
The Bigger Beauty Shift
There is something interesting happening in beauty right now: the conversation is moving from covering symptoms to understanding causes.
Skincare has already made the leap. Consumers increasingly want to know their skin barrier, ingredients and underlying concerns rather than simply buying another trending product.
Hair care appears to be entering a similar era.
Traya’s latest campaign taps into that shift by making hair loss awareness less intimidating and more actionable—starting with a test that takes about a minute.
Because sometimes, the most useful beauty advice isn’t another product recommendation.
It’s knowing when something deserves your attention.
