What began as a playful thought while writing the film eventually became one of its most unexpected casting choices.
There is something irresistibly intriguing about seeing a familiar face step into a role no one quite expected. For Preity Zinta, that moment arrives in VIBE, where the actor takes on the role of an undercover government agent—a casting choice that, as it turns out, began with a rather spontaneous idea in Kunal Kemmu’s head.
Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the trailer of VIBE, the upcoming action comedy written and directed by Kemmu, following the buzz surrounding its teaser. Packed with action, humour, chaos and unexpected twists, the film brings together Kemmu, Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava and debutant Vanshika Dhir for a story that appears to be as unpredictable as its casting.
But Zinta’s character, in particular, has an interesting story behind it.
While writing the film, Kemmu found himself imagining a scene in which a woman reveals that the life everyone assumed she was living was actually a cover—and that she was, in fact, a government agent. In his imagination, that woman was none other than Preity Zinta.
The idea was initially just that—a thought. But once the screenplay was complete and the casting process began, Kemmu realised that the unexpected choice could be precisely what made the character work.
“So, when I came to this character, I was genuinely thinking about who it would be, what it would be. And in my mind, I’m also a big Preeti Zinta fan. So, what happens is, when that woman comes in, she’s Preeti Zinta. And people say, Preeti Zinta, she’s an undercover agent. And Preeti Zinta says, “what did you think? I got married and went to America, this is my life. I’m actually a government agent”. So, this thought came to my mind, but of course, I didn’t carry on with that thought. But when I finished writing this film, and then it came to casting this, I had never seen her acting before. No one would have expected this. So, it’ll be the best casting. Now, all I need to do is get her to say yes. So, that’s how the journey started. But I’m very happy that she agreed to do this film. And I think she looks lovely as Marimatch.”
It is precisely this element of surprise that makes the casting stand out. Zinta, one of Bollywood’s most recognisable faces, enters VIBE with a character that appears to deliberately challenge audience expectations. The result is a combination of familiarity and intrigue—especially for audiences who have watched her evolve across decades of Hindi cinema.
For Kemmu, the process also reflects the spontaneity that can sometimes shape the most memorable creative decisions. A fleeting idea conceived during writing eventually became a real character, a real casting choice and, now, one of the biggest talking points surrounding the film.
Written and directed by Kunal Kemmu, VIBE is produced by Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani under Drongo Films, in association with Amazon MGM Studios. The film stars Kunal Kemmu alongside Preity G Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava and Vanshika Dhir.
With its combination of action, comedy and an intentionally unexpected ensemble, VIBE looks set to bring a distinctly irreverent energy to the big screen.
And if there is one thing the trailer has already made clear, it is that Preity Zinta as an undercover agent is a plot twist worth watching.
VIBE releases in theatres on September 18.
