Bringing together 48 business owners and trade leaders in Srinagar, DTDC’s initiative aims to help Kashmiri artisans, manufacturers and MSMEs explore digital commerce, logistics and access to wider domestic and international markets.
A Pashmina shawl woven in Kashmir, saffron cultivated in the Valley or a willow cricket bat crafted by a local manufacturer carries more than a regional identity. Each represents a business, a livelihood and the possibility of reaching customers far beyond its place of origin. The challenge, however, lies in connecting these distinctive products with the infrastructure and platforms needed to compete in an increasingly digital marketplace.
With DTDC Udaan, DTDC Express Ltd. is looking to bridge that gap, beginning with Kashmir. Launched as the first chapter of an initiative designed to help regional businesses explore new markets, the programme brings logistics, digital commerce and fulfilment into the conversation around how local enterprises can grow beyond their traditional trading networks.
The initiative arrives at a time when online commerce is creating additional routes for businesses to showcase products and connect with consumers across India. For Kashmir’s artisans, manufacturers and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the opportunity extends across established categories such as Pashmina, GI-tagged saffron, premium dry fruits and handicrafts, as well as locally manufactured willow sports equipment.
Taking Local Enterprise Beyond Familiar Markets
For many smaller businesses, the ambition to expand is only one part of the equation. Establishing an online presence, finding new customers, coordinating shipments and managing fulfilment across distant markets can present practical challenges. Access to reliable logistics and digital infrastructure can help address some of these barriers, allowing businesses to explore opportunities beyond their immediate geographies.
DTDC Udaan seeks to bring these considerations closer to Kashmir’s business community by highlighting how technology-enabled commerce and logistics can support the next stage of regional enterprise.
The initiative’s first chapter was marked by an event in Srinagar that brought together 48 business owners and trade leaders from across Kashmir’s commercial ecosystem. Among the participants were willow sports equipment manufacturers Tramboo Sports and Hangul Sports, alongside businesses associated with traditional products and regional produce.
The session opened with a keynote address by Rajesh Nair, Business Head, North, DTDC, followed by discussions on the role of digital commerce, logistics and fulfilment in helping businesses expand their reach.
From Regional Craft to National Opportunity
Kashmir’s commercial identity spans both heritage-led craftsmanship and manufacturing. Its Pashmina textiles, saffron, dry fruits and handicrafts are closely associated with the region, while its willow sports equipment represents another avenue through which local manufacturers can reach wider audiences.
Connecting these products with new customers requires more than visibility alone. Businesses must also be able to manage orders and deliver products reliably across geographies. For smaller enterprises, strengthening these capabilities can complement existing trade relationships while opening additional avenues for growth.
Speaking about the launch, Abhishek Chakraborty, CEO, DTDC Express Ltd., said, “Across Bharat, there are businesses creating exceptional products with the potential to reach customers around the world. Kashmir, with its world-renowned Pashmina shawls, GI-tagged saffron, traditional handicrafts and willow sports equipment, is a wonderful example of this. Through DTDC Udaan, we want to help bridge the gap between local enterprise and global opportunity by bringing our logistics network, technology and fulfilment capabilities closer to these businesses. With 16,500+ channel partners as an integral part of our network, we can offer not just connectivity but also local points of contact to guide and handhold businesses as they grow. Kashmir marks the first chapter of DTDC Udaan, and we look forward to extending this initiative to regional business ecosystems across Bharat.”
The Digital Commerce Connection
An important part of this broader opportunity is Kaarigo, DTDC’s e-commerce platform focused on authentic Indian products, artisans and regional sellers. The platform offers local makers and MSMEs a potential route to establish an online presence and introduce their offerings to customers beyond their existing markets.
For businesses whose products are rooted in regional craftsmanship or cultural heritage, digital platforms can create additional opportunities for discovery. Combined with logistics and fulfilment capabilities, they can help sellers explore a broader customer base while continuing to build on their existing business relationships.
The wider proposition is to bring together the different elements required for market expansion: product discovery, digital access, shipping and fulfilment. While the needs of individual businesses will vary, these capabilities can help make reaching customers in other parts of India more accessible and support exploration of international markets where commercially viable.
Building Connections Across Bharat
With Kashmir serving as the first chapter, DTDC Udaan signals the company’s intention to engage with regional business ecosystems across India. The initiative places local enterprises at the centre of a wider conversation about market access, digital adoption and the role of logistics in enabling business growth.
For Kashmir’s small businesses, the opportunity is not simply to take regional products to new destinations, but to build additional routes to customers while preserving the distinctiveness of what they create.
From a handcrafted Pashmina shawl to a willow cricket bat, the next stage of growth may depend as much on the networks connecting a product to its buyer as on the product itself. Through DTDC Udaan, the company aims to bring those connections closer to the businesses looking to make that journey.
