From two looms in Rajasthan to a global rug house, Mahesh K. Choudhary’s journey reflects entrepreneurship, craftsmanship and persistence.
Mr. Mahesh K. Choudhary, Founder and Chairman of Saraswati Global Rugs, has built his entrepreneurial journey around a simple belief: dreams take time, but they are worth pursuing.
His association with weaving began at an early age, when his father encouraged him to learn the craft. The experience introduced him to rugs, weaving techniques and, importantly, the artisans whose skills bring handmade rugs to life.
After completing his education in commerce and business administration in Churu, Rajasthan, Mahesh took his first major step into entrepreneurship.
The Journey Begins with Two Looms
In 1978, Mahesh founded Saraswati Exports in Churu with just two looms. What began as a modest enterprise gradually developed into a larger rug business as he expanded production, worked closely with artisans and began taking Indian handmade rugs to international markets.
The business continued to evolve over the following decades. Manufacturing expanded to Jaipur, while a dyeing and spinning plant was established in 1999. In 2001, the company entered the U.S. market through Amer Rugs. By 2007, Saraswati Exports had evolved into Saraswati Global.
The transformation reflected Mahesh’s long-term approach to business—building steadily while remaining connected to the craft at the heart of the company.
Two Generations, One Journey
The next chapter began in 2011, when Mahesh’s son, Raj Choudhary, joined the family business.
Bringing a perspective shaped by international markets, design and changing consumer preferences, Raj became part of the effort to take Saraswati Global into its next phase.
The partnership between the two generations has combined the craftsmanship and values established by Mahesh with a contemporary understanding of global markets and evolving design preferences.
Saraswati Global Rugs: Craftsmanship at Global Scale
Today, Saraswati Global Rugs is a luxury rug house rooted in Jaipur, with a journey spanning more than four decades.
The company works across several rug-making techniques, including hand-knotted, hand-loomed, hand-tufted and hand-hooked rugs. Its collections bring together traditional Indian craftsmanship and contemporary design, catering to a range of modern luxury interiors.
The scale of the business extends across 10,000+ artisans and 2,250+ looms, with its craftsmanship reaching customers in 60+ countries.
In India, Saraswati Global has stores in Jaipur, Mumbai and New Delhi, alongside its international presence, including the United States.
Its collections range from traditional handcrafted designs to contemporary rugs created for modern luxury spaces. Yet, at the centre of the business remains the relationship between the company, its artisans and the centuries-old craft of Indian rug-making.
Beyond Business: Giving Back to the Community
For Mahesh K. Choudhary, entrepreneurship has also been closely connected to creating opportunities for others.
His commitment to education, healthcare and community development led to the establishment of the Saraswati Global Foundation and B.R. International School. Through these initiatives, he has supported efforts aimed at improving access to education, healthcare and wider community development.
This philanthropic dimension adds another layer to a business journey that began with two looms in Rajasthan.
From Two Looms to a Global Legacy
Mahesh K. Choudhary’s journey with Saraswati Global Rugs is ultimately a story of entrepreneurship, Indian craftsmanship and persistence.
What started in 1978 as a small operation with two looms has grown into a global rug business connecting Indian artisans and craftsmanship with homes, designers and customers around the world.
As Saraswati Global continues to evolve across markets and generations, the foundation remains rooted in the same principles that shaped its beginnings: respect for craftsmanship, long-term thinking and the belief that meaningful dreams are built one step at a time.
