The AI Skills Gap Isn’t Tomorrow’s Problem—It’s Today’s Hiring Challenge
For decades, a university degree was considered the primary passport to employment. Today, that equation is changing. Employers increasingly expect graduates to arrive with not only academic knowledge but also the ability to work alongside artificial intelligence, analyse data, solve business problems and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies.
The conversation has shifted from whether AI will transform jobs to whether graduates are ready for an AI-first workplace.
Recognising this shift, EY India and Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) have launched AI VIBE (Varsity for Innovation, Business and Economics)—a first-of-its-kind industry-academia initiative designed to prepare students for careers where artificial intelligence is no longer a specialist skill but a foundational capability.
Coinciding with SRCC’s centenary year, the 12-month programme represents a broader rethinking of how higher education can evolve alongside industry.
Moving Beyond the Traditional Classroom
One of the biggest criticisms of higher education has long been the gap between academic learning and workplace expectations.
While universities excel at building conceptual understanding, industries increasingly demand graduates who can apply knowledge to real-world business challenges from day one.
AI VIBE seeks to bridge that divide by combining classroom learning with industry immersion. Developed jointly by EY India and SRCC, the programme will be open to SRCC students from the third semester onwards through a selective admission process involving assessments, interviews and a Statement of Purpose (SOP).
Rather than relying solely on examinations, participants will be evaluated through continuous project-based assessments and a final evaluation, reflecting the collaborative and problem-solving nature of today’s workplaces.
Building AI-Native Professionals
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming embedded across consulting, finance, marketing, operations and decision-making. As a result, AI literacy is emerging as a core professional competency, regardless of industry.
The AI VIBE curriculum has therefore been designed to expose students to both technical knowledge and business application. Participants will receive immersive learning in:
- Machine Learning
- Generative AI
- AI Agents
- Decision Intelligence
- Data Analytics
- Financial Technologies (FinTech)
- Blockchain
- Responsible AI
- AI Governance
By combining these subjects with real business case studies and applied learning, the programme aims to produce graduates who are comfortable working in AI-enabled organisations rather than simply understanding AI in theory.
Learning from Industry, Not Just About It
A defining feature of AI VIBE is its emphasis on direct engagement with practitioners.
Students will participate in hackathons, industry interactions, mentoring sessions and hands-on business projects led by EY India’s AI specialists and industry professionals. The approach reflects an important shift in education—where exposure to real-world challenges becomes as valuable as classroom instruction.
Rajiv Memani, Chairman and CEO of EY India, emphasised this changing reality:
“At a time when AI is transforming businesses and the workplace, while creating demand for the skills of the future, students must view AI literacy as a foundational capability and cultivate it through continuous learning and curiosity.”
His remarks underscore a growing consensus across industries: AI is no longer a niche specialisation but a baseline expectation for future professionals.

A New Model for Higher Education
For SRCC, the initiative represents more than a new academic programme—it signals an evolution in how institutions prepare students for employment.
Commenting on the launch, Prof. Simrit Kaur, Principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce, said:
“Higher education is entering a period of profound change. By connecting education with industry, we are bridging the skills gap and enabling students to enter the workforce with greater confidence and readiness.”
The programme forms part of SRCC’s centenary celebrations, reinforcing its ambition to remain at the forefront of academic innovation while strengthening industry partnerships.

Part of EY’s Larger AI Vision
AI VIBE also reflects EY India’s broader commitment to building an AI-ready workforce.
Globally, EY invests over US$1 billion annually in AI-first platforms and technology solutions. Within India, the firm’s EY AI Varsity initiative has already equipped approximately 50,000 employees with AI capabilities, demonstrating that continuous learning is becoming central to professional development.
Beyond its own workforce, EY has expanded access to AI education through initiatives such as the AI Skills Passport, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, offering free online AI learning opportunities for young people aged 16 and above.
Together with programmes like Techathon, which attracts nearly 50,000 student entries annually to solve real-world technology challenges, AI VIBE strengthens EY India’s growing ecosystem for future talent development.
The Bigger Picture: Degrees Will Matter, But Skills Will Matter More
The workplace of the next decade will not simply reward technical knowledge—it will reward adaptability.
As artificial intelligence becomes integrated into everyday business functions, graduates will increasingly be expected to collaborate with intelligent systems, interpret data responsibly and apply emerging technologies to solve complex business problems.
Programmes such as AI VIBE represent an important shift in higher education, where industry and academia move beyond partnership announcements to co-create learning experiences that reflect the realities of modern work.
For students, the message is becoming increasingly clear: earning a degree may open the first door, but developing AI fluency will determine how far they go once they step inside.
