Higher education today is no longer judged only by academic results or placements. Students now look for institutions that can help them understand industries before they formally step into professional careers. Recruiters prefer graduates who already have practical exposure, while parents increasingly evaluate universities based on overall career readiness rather than only rankings.
This shift is gradually reshaping how universities approach education across India.
Sigma University in Vadodara reflects that transition through its focus on combining academic learning with practical exposure, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry-oriented education.
The university’s efforts in this direction were recently recognised at the Pride of Gujarat Awards 2026, organised by Divya Bhaskar, where Dr. Harsh Shah and Dr. Shreya Shah received the award from Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on behalf of Sigma University for being recognised as the “Most Prominent Private University in Central Gujarat.”
The recognition highlighted the university’s growing emphasis on preparing students for real-world professional environments rather than limiting education only to classroom-based theory.
What stands out at Sigma University is that practical exposure is approached differently across disciplines, instead of following one fixed academic structure everywhere.
In Hotel Management, students begin interacting with operational environments early in their academic journey. Alongside hospitality theory, they receive hands-on exposure that helps them understand how day-to-day industry operations function in real settings. The department also offers international placement opportunities, something many hospitality students actively consider while selecting institutions today.
Physiotherapy follows a more clinical learning approach. Students are exposed to real patient treatment environments during their academic years rather than depending entirely on demonstrations or simulated practice. This allows classroom concepts to connect more naturally with practical situations.
The Science stream follows a lab-intensive structure supported through Sigma University’s collaboration with Virohan (healthcare education). The partnership introduces healthcare-focused industry exposure into academics, helping students balance theoretical learning with practical understanding.
Law students participate in moot court exercises, legal drafting sessions, and client counselling activities. These experiences familiarise students with practical legal communication and professional situations before formally entering the field.
Creative education is also closely connected with industry exposure. Through its association with Freebird Animation, students pursuing design and animation gain insight into industry workflows, project execution, and professional creative environments while still studying.
Beyond academics, entrepreneurship has also become an important part of student culture across campuses in recent years. Many students are now exploring startup ideas, independent ventures, and alternative career paths while still in college.
At Sigma University, this ecosystem is supported through SEDIC, the university’s entrepreneurship and incubation platform. Recognised as the first government-approved Nodal Institute in Vadodara, SEDIC has gradually built a support structure for student founders and early-stage startups. According to university figures, more than 100 startups have received funding support through the ecosystem over the last three years, contributing to the creation of over 500 jobs.
The university’s innovation ecosystem became more visible during NOVA 2.0, an initiative focused on entrepreneurship and innovation that brought together founders, industry experts, and ecosystem participants from different sectors.
The platform received over 550 startup applications globally, with 94 startups selected to pitch for funding access and pilot opportunities. More than 620 participants attended the initiative, including 44 domain experts and 55 industry and ecosystem partners. The expo segment featured 31 innovations, while nearly 180 founders participated on-site. Conversations during the initiative reflected a more collaborative than competitive environment.
Funding support has also strengthened the university’s startup ecosystem. Associated startups have collectively received over ₹1.68 crore through the Startup Gujarat Grant Scheme, more than ₹92 lakh through the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and over ₹70 lakh through SSIP 2.0 and CSR-backed initiatives.
To further support startup founders, Sigma University has also developed a nine-pillar support system offering pre-incubation guidance, mentoring, FabLab and 3D prototyping access, branding and marketing support, market research assistance, IP and patent guidance, pitch training, investor and government connections, along with MSME and CSR collaborations.
Beyond academics and entrepreneurship, the university also encourages physical and extracurricular development through facilities such as cricket and football grounds, badminton courts, and gym infrastructure.
As expectations from higher education continue evolving, universities are increasingly being evaluated on how effectively they prepare students for environments beyond classrooms. Sigma University’s recognition at the Pride of Gujarat Awards 2026 reflects this broader shift towards practical learning, innovation, and industry-oriented education.
